Technical Department Intern
Department: Omnium
My experience
Overview
Gathered data (literally by standing on the production floor with a stopwatch and a notebook - pretty cool) and then redesigned a process to be more efficient (including calling vendors to figure out costs, etc.). Also, catalogued existing plant inventory with another intern (yes, printing out PID's and checking off which tanks were/weren't there). It was kind of fun to crawl around in the plant finding what stuff was where, but also could be boring/dirty work.
It was a pretty small town (although Kansas City was only 1.5 hrs away) so if you don't like small-town life, this might not be the location for you. My boss, Lance Staggenbourg, was so kind and very welcoming to me (he invited me to his son's first birthday party!) and I really enjoyed working under him.
Would recommend it to people who...
Want real-world plant experience; are interested in plant design or plant management someday
