Electrical Engineering Intern
Department: T&D - Substation
My experience
Overview
I worked on a lot of little things and one big project. The big project was a breaker replacement in a substation, where I created the new plan for it, updated the drawings, and created a bill of materials. I also did a few as-built projects (looked at pictures of already completed projects and noted any discrepancies between that and the drawings), I worked on bills of wire, and went on some site visits.
Pro tip: if you have nothing to do but still want to, you know, get paid for your time there, play training videos on the education resource. You can log that time (and... you know... if you're not always paying perfect attention to the video.....)
Pros
Lots of interns, so there's company. They're also very good about answering questions you have and have no problem at all setting aside a few minutes to help you with your projects
Cons
You're either very busy or have nothing to do. They don't say this to the interns at much, but there's a big emphasis on billability that can be stressful

Advice on how to prepare
Power engineering isn't as flashy as some other types of engineering, but it's very important and just as challenging as other branches. If you don't like exactly what you're doing, there are tons of other aspects to power, even just within Burns & Mac
