Technical Intern IV
Department: Space Architecture Department
My experience
Overview
Wrote Python code for a home-grown analysis software suite for communication satellite constellations. Since the analysis software was built in-house, the code I was writing was actually being implemented in the software. Other things I worked on included large research projects in which I gathered data on commercially-available satellite hardware and used them in trade studies for the satellites that we were helping to design.
Aerospace Corporation is a really good in-between company on the spectrum of "9-5 government/corporate jobs" to "startup jobs". Work-life balance is excellent (no one is required to work more than 40hrs/week, but opportunities arise to work more than that if you wish), but the type of work they do (government satellite programs) is very interesting and engaging.
Would recommend it to people who...
are motivated by the "mission" (national security) and want to work on satellite/space projects.
Would NOT recommend it to people who...
want to know the impacts of everything they do (most of the work is classified but interns don't get security clearances, so once you do a task it often goes into a black box and you never know what happens to it).
Impact of work
How much knowledge or experience was needed going in (pre-requisites)?
Time spent working
How did working remote affect your experience?
Aerospace did a great job with the remote internship during Summer 2020. They had a lot of virtual events and I was very connected to my management and team. Internships are expected to revert back to in-person after 2020.

Advice on how to prepare
Many applicants don't understand the Aerospace's role within the industry, so do research on what kind of work they do and which government agencies they primarily support.
