Transportation Engineering Intern
Department: Roadway Design
My experience
Overview
Drafting various construction plans for roadway projects, including main construction plans, driveway profiles, drainage profiles, typical sections, staging plans, and detour routes. Some work with hydrology and drainage basins. There was some critical work of applying design standards and completing drawings from scratch and some more basic work such as annotations, dimensioning, and double-checking older work.
While the internship was virtual, the company culture was amazing. This was great when I had to constantly ask questions and seek guidance, but also just to foster personal connections and friendships. They held many happy hours, game nights, and social calls to help everyone feel connected and happier while working.
Would recommend it to people who...
Great first internship, learning how a roadway project is organized and completed, learning how a civil engineering firm operates, working for a smaller firm, more personal feel and engagement with coworkers.
Impact of work
How much knowledge or experience was needed going in (pre-requisites)?
Time spent working
How did working remote affect your experience?
It was more difficult to "look over people's shoulders" to get an idea of what other people were doing, especially in other departments or projects I was not working on.
