Transportation Engineering Intern
Department: Roadway Design
My experience
Overview
I spent a lot of time making small edits in Microstation- changing line styles, changing text and callouts, etc. Occasionally would get to do something a little different like drainage calculations or cost estimates. There were a lot of days they just didn't have much for me to do though
It was pretty obvious the employees I was working with (for the most part) did not love their jobs. Some left while I was there and my main mentor was debating leaving and going back to GDOT, even with lesser pay. Their work-life balance is not good
Pros
Nice office, friendly people, good pay
Cons
not much to do, very small transportation team in Atlanta, I was the only intern in the office
Impact of work
Time spent working
How did working remote affect your experience?
Not having to go into office every day was nice. I worked from home 2-3 days a week. We had flexible work hours too so I didn't have to work the typical 8-5. However, the office was often super empty when I would go in because most people work virtual and work different days of the week. It made it hard to connect with the team.

Advice on how to prepare
It was not difficult to get. I applied through LinkedIn and then had a ~30 min virtual interview with two roadway engineers.
