My experience
Overview
A majority of my work was commissioning and maintaining relays for power devices on various power line poles around the region. I'd travel with the test engineer to different poles, and depending on the task, I'd have to help with some minor wiring, inputting settings, or changing out hardware
Pros
Hands on work, loose schedule, work with actual impact, combination of mechanical and electrical skills
Cons
Downtime due to not having clearance to do officework in the late afternoons when it got hot outside, somewhat repetitive
Impact of work
Time spent working

Advice on how to prepare
Not necessary, but basic knowledge of circuits helps provide a basis of understanding of the inner workings of a power company. Power systems courses would have been especially helpful for me.
