Manufacturing Intern I
Department: ALD/Mono IPT
My experience
Overview
Led investigations into small inefficiencies in manufacturing of one type of tool. Cables that were intermittently not working, a leak that appeared after leak testing had already passed. Separately, redesigned a few kits used to connect the tool to facilities like compressed air and vacuum. Also helped code in Python a program to interface with a 3rd-party leak detector and troubleshoot which parts of a cooling water system were assembled with leaks.
Pros
Excellent culture. I was welcomed into the team, including offsite team-builders and daily standup meetings. Cool products: plasma, electricity, high temperatures, robotics, chemicals, automation, and more Good work/life balance, including benefits and professional development programs. Significant student loan assistance for full-time workers
Cons
Communication is not robust, across the company. Lam grew fast and patched systemic holes with "human glue" instead of computerized solutions or rigid processes. Humans are responsible for keeping the process stable and successful. Everyone has a full load of work, and sometimes more

Advice on how to prepare
I was in the MECOP internship program, and was hired because of past experience and ambitious personal robotics projects. Experience in Python and CAD software is a plus.
