Process Engineering Intern
Department: C2
My experience
Overview
- I examined the physical properties of the sheet in the quality assurance lab and used my data to identify relationships between process variables and quality of the product. - Conversely, I took measurements around the machine and examined their impact on sheet properties. - I helped with writing changes in the ladder logic (program that a computer uses to control automated parts of the paper machine) to accompany physical changes being made to the process.
There’s usually a number of co-ops/interns and you’ll live together so there’s potential to have a good community outside of work to spend time with.
Pros
- Really knowledgeable and welcoming people who are willing to help interns learn - Get to spend time in the field, not trapped at a desk - unlimited overtime - Covington is great location if you love the outdoors
Cons
- Didn’t use any of the softwares that may be requirements for Chem E positions in other industries

Advice on how to prepare
WestRock hires a number of freshmen for intern positions. This is an awesome job for students pursuing a pulp & paper certificate or paper science degree. I’d say if you’re an engineering major, a solid interview will make you a strong contestant for the position.
