My experience
Overview
Client coverage work - writing newsletters, summarizing documents and some client/investor presentations.
This was just a pretty boring and uninspiring experience, which was very disappointing. I knew going into it that there would be a lot of grunt work but what I didn’t expect was for there to be very little in the critical thought as to what we spent our time on: eg we would write weekly newsletter summarizing the news, and send them out as PDF attachments to a client list without being able to track who even opened them (or indeed stop to think about why anyone would be relying on Morgan Stanley for their news…in a weekly summary!). The social side of the office environment was non existent, people would come and go without saying hello, absolutely no team lunches or get togethers. Pretty baffling when you consider that while it’s a well paid job, there are plenty of equally well paid jobs that equally qualified candidates are considering in this labor market. Very disappointed that what is a major financial institution is stuck in the drag ages, no use of cloud computing whatsoever, everything saved as “version 28.2v10” and no real-time collaboration on documents. Wild.
Pros
Conceptually very interesting work and smart people. Well paid with overtime at 50% of hourly rate.
Cons
Awful outdate technology, culture of doing things as they have always been done. Very little socializing and no attempt to “sell” the company to interns.

Go through the coffee chat system by attending a webinar and then reaching out to participants afterwards. You’ll then be invited to interview.
