My experience
Overview
My biggest role was the automation of various tasks. For example, I developed a web crawler to search for a specific form required by an organization and take snapshots of the webpage. This saved someone from doing it manually. Other automation tasks involved more data heavy automation. Other tasks included completing regular and adhoc reports and mapping data with various LMI tools.
It seemed like experiences varied drastically depending on what team you're placed on. I remained mostly in the health space (think ACA and Medicare Advantage regulation). I learned a lot in my experience, but ultimately I feel like the impact of my work could have been much larger if I was placed on a different team. Luckily, as a co-op you're not really formally stuck to a team. It took me too long to realize this. If any team needs assistance, you can reach out. Ben Jilson is a good contact for co-ops. He's always looking for extra hands on his project. If you start a co-op at LMI and Ben Jilson is still working, I would definitely recommend reaching out! Also definitely ask about continuing part time during the school year. Some teams will request your work automatically, my team did not. I wish I knew to ask. This may have helped me to build more credibility and connections to assist with more impactful work. Also -- DMV area is an awesome place to live for a Summer so I do highly recommend the area!!
Would recommend it to people who...
Are interested in government consulting. If you're on the right team, you can get started on security clearances as an intern which will be invaluable for any government related position down the line!
Would NOT recommend it to people who...
Are interested in shaping policy. As a consultant, you are there to implement and regulate what's currently in place. Policy can be influenced by government consulting, but from what I saw, most of the work is following through on already existing policy.
