Mechanical Engineering Co-op
Department: Electro-Mechanical Team
My experience
Overview
Mostly created/fixed drawings for existing tool changer modules. Also modified/customised existing modules to fit customer needs. I also designed several fixtures to help production and calibration of different products. That was the most fun as I got to play around with fiber optics equipments, go through the design process, learn GD&T and help make progress in R&D.
I will say that COVID did slow down business so that might have contributed to why I didn't have too much to do. However, the work I did do felt important as they do go into the customer. I would say the position isn't the most exciting, but it wasn't a waste of time. The company also has different departments and positions for interns that have widely varying intern experiences. I would not write this position off as it was easy to get, offers decent pay and housing and have a lot of opportunities to do other things. I am going back for my second rotation but this times in the applications department which is actually located in Michigan. Will leave another review when that's over.
Would recommend it to people who...
Is looking for an opportunity to work outside of Georgia; who doesn't want a difficult/stressful experience; and who wants to dip their foot in the water in terms of working in an engineering position.
Would NOT recommend it to people who...
Really wants to be busy all the time and work over time. Wants to learn a lot of new skills. Don't like sitting/standing behind a desk all day.

Advice on how to prepare
The interview isn't that rigorous and mostly asking you about things on you resume to make sure you mean what you put. They like good grades. Ask lots of questions.
