The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is the nonprofit, applied research division of the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). Founded in 1934 as the Engineering Experiment Station, GTRI has grown to more than 2,400 employees supporting eight laboratories in over 20 locations around the country, and performs more than $500 million of problem-solving research annually for government and industry.

Cannot be too specific due to the nature of GTRI's clients, but basically I was tasked with updating software binaries to newer versions within AWS, altering the existing Ansible processes for installing these apps, and writing/consolidating documentation for this. 

Most of the team was working remote or hybrid, so not a huge deal, but still unfortunate since could not meet many of the senior devs.

I wrote machine learning code in python targeted to optimize certain electromagnetic equipment. I also used a 3D modeling software to create the piece of equipment. 

Preparing for the arrival of a satellite: procuring tools, writing procedures, ensuring compliance with standards. 
Working on a website.
Fabricating and characterizing supercapacitors.

My main project was an end-to-end data science project creating a deep learning model to perform a classification task. I got to explore the available data and build some interesting features that I eventually created a dataset out of. I also built the pipeline to feed the data into the architecture I had designed using Keras with some custom TensorFlow.
I had another project involving using evolutionary algorithms to model how neural networks make predictions that was also very interesting. My key contribution was a front-end tool visualizing image preprocessing and the decision surface of the model.

I worked in the closed space team in the IT department. That work was interesting but I did the work so fast I was giving more work with the IT department when I did really well but I hated being IT. I wanted to do cyber related things in the lab but was never given opportunities. I did get to work on a internal research project for an COVID related app, that was cool.

Definitely impacted being able to see people in person and hangout after work. I enjoyed working inperson and having people to socialize and meet people in the lab doing really cool work.

Reverse engineering old avionics. Specifically, the bulk of my work was in characterizing (determining and modeling the behavior) mechatronic components.

Made things a lot more impersonal, but the commute time got even better!

Remote was fine. They probably won't continue remote after Covid.

Created model architecture for a military test event.
Created metamodels and data models to represent data products coming out of software and hardware tools.
Created a data governance plan to manage data transfer, storage, and edit.
Used Velocity Template Language to generate tables using instances from Cameo Systems Modeler.

It didn't affect the work or experience that much since most of the work had to be done on a computer.

Due to the situation on the government side, my team was in an in-between phase waiting on the ok to develop new features. I was mostly relegated to bug fixes and reducing the project's technical debt. Worked with a lot of outdated frameworks and cleaned up lots of old code. 

Did not impact experience too much, will likely continue to be hybrid after COVID

I was able to help and assist with many different projects related to microwave antenna measurements and material EM characterization. I did mainly setting up of ranges for measurements (physical), measuring of antennas or materials, and then processing that data in Matlab. During any given week I assisted in that process for 4-6 different projects with one or two of them taking more time than others. Some days are very involved and busy and others I’ll struggle to find anything to do/ charge working hours to. I recommend taking one or two classes while working full time just in case you have some down time. I learned textbooks worth of practical knowledge on electromagnetic waves (specifically how they behave in the microwave spectrum) which is something to heavily consider besides just going through the daily motions. I know enough to qualify for most entry level EE positions regarding EM waves and the daily motions helped retain that knowledge. 

I spent the entire time developing a tool. It allowed users to edit files that were previously permanent and had a user interface. It was created in Windows Presentation Foundation using a Model-View-ViewModel architecture and was primarily written in C# and XAML. I had a mentor on the project and I spent the first few weeks learning how to write in C# and XML. You definitely need coding experience going in but I had only taken AP Computer Science and CS 1371 at that point and that was a good enough starting point. 

Developed REST endpoints and created/updated models in Django. Wrote UI functionality in React and AngularJS.

No effect. A plan is in place to return to office work after COVID

LIDAR laser light scanner and detection. 

Less resources, and less work due to fully remote 10 week internship. I think some projects will continue remote, but some seemed to be rather unproductive...

Created custom machine learning models to analyze large datasets and predict important features of said data.

Was working on a website to display some data. I had lots of freedom to do as much or as little as possible. Mine was a smaller project than others because it was a 5 week 20 hrs a week internship, as they gave it relatively late (I had another internship cancelled due to covid, and this was a last minute program they did). 

They had adjusted policies for remote well. I don’t think it will continue to be remote

Working on developing/improving and evolutionary framework in Python; this included creating primitives and algorithms that improved how well the framework handles text data  for classification and image data for detection and classification.

A research based internship that was largely self-paced. Having more structure to deliverables would have made for more engaging program. Worked on creating novel CNN to classify aerial imagery.

I was a research intern in GTRI's summer URIP program. I worked on a team of 3 other interns. We worked on a networking project which involved sensors, microcontrollers, networking, web development, and databases. This project was basically a mini project and test trial of what our mentor really wanted to do in the future. The application is very nice, because it lists all the different projects available and you get to apply to which ever ones seem interesting.

I really enjoyed that we had a lot of freedom during our internship in terms of work-life and our engineering work itself. I was basically the back-end person of my group despite having absolutely no experience in this. I quickly learned back-end stuff such as javascript, mongoDB, and sails.js which was challenging but useful as well. The mentors are usually pretty awesome and fun to be around. The culture is very laid back (it is a government job after all).

I really enjoyed the laid back culture, had a lot of personal freedom for our project, and got to work in a team with other interns.

Interns had a separate office from full-time employees (they were down the hall). Interns were expected to come to work and work on your assigned research project (in teams of 3-5, only interns). Our team was relatively autonomous. You weren't required to work specific hours, but most of us showed up before 9 AM, and you weren't allowed to work more than 40 hours in a given week. We also got one sick day.

Since GTRI is technically government contracting, I expected the work environment to be very strict and uptight. Instead, everyone in my department was really laid back and cool, and easy to talk to. They also had a few tours around all of the labs so you get to see all the different potential employment opportunities at GTRI.

Worked on the inflight entertainment system for a major airliner. I had the opportunity to do either full stack web dev w/ Java-Spring and HTML/CSS/JS or mobile dev w/ Kotlin; I chose full stack. Most of my time in the beginning was doing basic bug fixing, but then got to work on some more critical sections of the system. 

Worked on Python project for connecting different systems together

I worked on the GTRI's existing framework and worked on implementing features within their framework
